RIO DE JANEIRO — American Dalilah Muhammad dominated the 400-meter hurdles on Thursday, winning gold in 53.13 seconds as a light rain fell on Olympic Stadium.

A former Southern Cal hurdler, Muhammad overcame an injury-plagued 2015 season and won the U.S. trials earlier this year. She was the silver medalist in this event at the world championships in 2013.

The Queens, N.Y. native took command of the race in the final 100 meters, sprinting off the final turn from Lane 3 and opening up daylight on the field. She cruised home, beating Denmark’s Sara Slott Petersen by a comfortable .42 seconds. American Ashley Spencer held on for the bronze medal finishing in a personal-best. 53.72.
