Webb School of Knoxville class of 2024 star wide receiver Markeis Barrett signed with Vanderbilt on Tuesday afternoon at the school's signing event.
The Mr. Football finalist said he was excited to play in the SEC where he will have a lot of eyes on him, but he isn't just excited to play football at the next level.
"I just became a first-generation college student in my family," Barrett said. "My mom and my dad ended up not going to college, but they put me in a position where I can."
Barrett also said it was important for him to go to an in-state school and still be close to his loved ones.
"It was either Tennessee or Vanderbilt," Barrett said.
The three-star recruit said he's still excited to be able to come back to Knoxville and play at Neyland Stadium a couple times in his college career.
"Family and friends will get a chance to come out and watch me play," Barrett said. "At the same time, go Vandy."
Barrett will get to play Tennessee for the first time next season when his Commodores host the Vols in the regular season finale on Saturday, Nov. 30 in Nashville.
