KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee baseball head coach Tony Vitello isn't putting too much stock into the Vols' No. 1 ranking this week.
"It's voted on by very smart people that are doing their research, but still, it's voted on," Vitello said following the Vols 6-3 win against Queens University on Tuesday night.
Tennessee earned a No. 1 ranking for just the second time in program history this week after defeating Florida in a three-series this past weekend, and also because the previous top two, Texas A&M and Arkansas, both lost conference series.
"We talked about Leonardo DiCaprio," Vitello said. "How does that work out for his Oscars situation? Not fair if you ask me."
Vitello drew the comparison to the acclaimed actor to say that the team is not defined by accolades that are voted on, and instead by actually being a great team with national championship goals.
DiCaprio is widely regarded as one of the best actors in his generation, despite only winning one Academy Award, which is also a voted-on award. He has been nominated for six Oscars overall throughout his storied career.
"That's just my opinion, but he's doing just fine. He puts out good work," Vitello said. "I'm pretty sure we would all have fun hanging out with that guy. I know you and I aren't invited though."
The Vols will take their No. 1 ranking on the road against their biggest rivals when Tennessee starts a conference series against Vanderbilt beginning Friday, May 10 at 7 p.m.
