ATHENS, Ga. — Tennessee women's basketball led for all but 12 seconds in the Lady Vols' dominant win over Georgia at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens, Ga. on Thursday night.
Jewel Spear and Rickea Jackson both put up stellar performances as the Lady Vols defeated the Lady Bulldogs 95-73. Tennessee's scoring output was their highest total in SEC play so far and also the most points Georgia has allowed all season.
Spear led all scorers with 25 points and went 8-for-14 from the floor and 5-for-9 from long range, while Jackson put up 21 points on 8-for-17 shooting and 3-for-4 from distance. Tennessee center Tamari Key made her first start of the season and matched a season-high with ten points along with eight rebounds in the win.
The Lady Vols started both the first and second quarters with scoring runs to build a comfortable lead in the first half. Tennessee opened the first quarter on a 7-0 run and then began the second quarter with 13 unanswered points while holding Georgia to just 4-of-14 shooting to go into halftime up 41-24.
Tennessee dominated the glass and outrebounded Georgia 41-25, including 16 offensive boards from the Lady Vols compared to just eight from Georgia.
The Lady Vols improved to 6-2 in SEC play this season following the win and 13-7 overall. Tennessee is back home to host Missouri inside the Food City Center on Sunday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m.
