KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Sweetwater High School football hired Tommy Bunch as their new head coach ahead of the 2024 high school football season on Friday.

Bunch was the previous head coach at Meigs County High School, leading the Tigers to a 12-1 record in his first year as head coach.

This season, Bunch also led the team to a Region 3AAA Championship and a quarterfinal appearance in the playoffs.

Former Sweetwater head coach Caleb Slover resigned in his first year after coaching for just five games in the 2023 season. He led the Wildcats to a 2-3 record before his resignation.

Assistant coach David Staff took over as the interim coach for the remainder of the season and Sweetwater finished with a 2-8 overall record and 0-5 in region play.

Bunch helped lead his alma mater to Class 2A state runner-up finishes in 2019 and 2020. Before head coaching at Meigs County, Bunch was an assistant coach at the school for 11 years.
