Philadelphia Eagles waive former Vols defensive end Derek Barnett

Barnett, a Nashville native, was an All-American during his time at UTK.

VFL and Tennessee all-time sack leader Derek Barnett is looking for a new NFL team after the Philadelphia Eagles waived him Friday, according to multiple reports.

Barnett was a 1st-round pick for the Eagles out of Tennessee in the 2017 draft.

The Nashville native's production on the team tailed off in recent years. He missed most of last year with a torn ACL. He's been a non-factor this year, notching no sacks and no quarterback hits in eight games this season, NBC Sports reported

During his time with the Eagles he recorded 21 1/2 sacks over 73 games. Barnett didn't play Monday in the game against the Chiefs for what was listed as "personal reasons."

Among Eagles fans, Barnett will best be remembered for recovering a fumble by Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in Super Bowl 52 in 2018 with two minutes left in the game. The Eagles went on to win.

For Vol fans, Barnett is hailed his fierce play, surpassing Reggie White as the all-time sacks leader with 33.

Among his many game highlights were his contributions to beating the Georgia Bulldogs in October 2016 in Athens. Ga. It remains the last time Tennessee beat Georgia in their rivalry.

In going pro, Barnett skipped his senior year at UT. In 2017, he penned a letter expressing thanks for his time in Knoxville.

"As I enter the next journey of my life, it's most important to me that you know, all I've ever wanted to do was represent the Tennessee Football program and my home state of Tennessee well," he wrote.
