KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee baseball Head Coach Tony Vitello described the series against LSU as "gutty" throughout the weekend. Game 3 was no different, as the Vols' pitching staff and consistent hitters behind the plate led Tennessee to an 8-4 victory, sweeping the series against the Tigers inside Lindsey Nelson Stadium on Sunday.
Christian Moore's performance was nothing short of explosive. The junior infielder single-handedly drove half of UT's runs with two big swings. His first homer broke a 2-2 tie after LSU grabbed a run in the top of the sixth.
Moore is now tied with Blake Burke at 42 home runs, a career-high at Tennessee. Burke also slammed his 42nd career big swing to open the scoring for Tennessee against the Tigers.
Moore's second homer plated three more runs for UT, but LSU's Tommy White cut the deficit in half with a two-run long ball in the eighth inning.
However, catcher Cal Stark came in clutch at the bottom of the inning and added two insurance runs off a double to left center field to create a bigger gap on the scoreboard, 8-4.
On the mound, Zander Sechrist got the start and ended with five strikeouts, six hits and just two runs allowed.
Andrew Behnke and Kirby Connell combined for 1.1 innings. Behnke struck out the only batter he faced and earned his first career win. Aaron Combs sealed the game and retired the side to finish the Vols' first SEC series sweep of the season.
Next, Tennessee hosts Bellarmine on Tuesday at 6 p.m. After that matchup, the Vols return to SEC play for a series against Kentucky.
