KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Maryville quarterback Will Jones and Midway linebacker Tate Mason have earned Player of the Week honors for Week 6 of the high school football season.
On offense, Jones threw a near-perfect game against Hardin Valley in the 49-7 win. The sophomore quarterback completed 12 of his 13 pass attempts for 151 yards and three touchdowns. Jones also won Offensive Player of the Week last year against the Hawks.
The Rebels are now 6-0 on the season, and Jones wants to help his team achieve its goal this season.
"Right now, we are taking it week by week," said Jones. "But of course that's in the back of our mind. We want to get to a state championship, and Maryville hasn't been since 2019 — so, we want to be the team to get back there."
Mason is taking home his first Player of the Week honors. In Midway's 20-point win over Jellico, he put up 7.5 tackles, 1 TFL, and not one but two blocked punts.
He was also nominated for Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three touchdowns against the Blue Devils. Mason said he's proud of getting the award on the defensive side but shocked to be nominated for both.
"I was like, 'Oh gosh,'" said Mason. "I didn't know I was gonna get nominated for both. I was proud of myself but also had to thank my coaches and my teammates for pushing me."
Maryville has a big matchup this week. The Rebels play Bearden on Thursday night, and Midway takes on Oliver Springs on Friday night. The Bobcats are currently on a four-game win streak.
