KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Most marathons take place over the course of one day... but for young kids, that's a bit too much.
That's why the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon Kids Run takes place over two months. Kids can run or walk a bit every day. By the end of March, they'll have completed a marathon.
The Covenant Kids Run is part of the Knoxville Marathon weekend, but the fun actually started at Zoo Knoxville on Saturday. Organizers said over 600 kids showed up to run.
It's a program created to encourage local kids to lead healthy and active lifestyles while participating in an exciting, goal-oriented, community event.
Those participating will run a total of 25 miles in the time period leading up to the race on March 28, 2020. On race day, participants will run a 1-mile course, finally completing the marathon distance of 26.2 miles.
Kids can choose to either run or walk the distance, and grown-ups are encouraged to join them!
Each child received a log book to keep track of their miles. You can see the zoo course here.
The Knoxville Marathon is set for Sunday, March 29. WBIR will once again cover the race live.
