KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Sportscaster Kirk Herbstreit announced Thursday his beloved golden retriever Ben has died after battling cancer.

Herbstreit said the cancer had spread throughout Ben's organs and that "there was nothing left to do."

He posted a heartfelt message on "X", honoring his buddy, saying Ben was a "smart-loving-gentle-patient-inquisitive-and welcoming to all."

Ben was a crowd favorite on College GameDay. He first traveled with Herbstreit last season when the Oregan Ducks faced the Washington Huskies on Oct. 14, according to ESPN.
