KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The high school football regular season is about to come to a close in East Tennessee, which means another set of players were crowned the 10Sports Blitz Players of the Week.
Our offensive player of the week, for the second time this season, was William Blount QB Brett Cortez.
We know Cortez can fill the stat sheet. He threw for 286 passing yards and three touchdowns. He also had 91 rushing yards, and a rushing touchdown in the Governor's win against Soddy Daisy. Their playoff hopes are still alive heading into this week. Cortez says he's grateful to be helping this group make a run.
"I just feel blessed to be voted by my peers and to be nominated," Cortez said. "These guys just love each other and it's a fun group to be around. But they flip the switch when they need to."
Clinton defensive back Bo Wright was named Defensive Player of the Week.
He helped Clinton take down Karns in just his second-ever defensive start. Wright racked up 14 total tackles and his first career interception in the Dragons playoff-clinching victory on Friday.
Wright said it was great to get that first pick, and his teammates were happy for him.
"I knew I had to get that interception because I already missed two," Wright said.
Regular season finales are on tap this week. William Blount has a huge regional battle at Jefferson County on Friday night, while Clinton hosts Heritage. Both games start at 7 p.m.
