Maryville High School has a new head varsity football coach following the departure of George Quarles to Furman University.
Maryville City Schools announced the appointment of Derek Hunt as the school’s head coach on Tuesday.
“It has been my great privilege and honor to work beside George Quarles for the past seven seasons at MHS,” Hunt said in a news release. “I am humbled to accept this position, and look forward to continuing to work with our excellent coaching staff to offer the best possible high school football experience for students, fans and our community.”
While Hunt currently teaches seventh grade made at Montgomery Ridge Intermediate School, he begins his new coaching duties immediately. Hunt will be on the faculty at Maryville High School for the 2017-18 school year, according to a Maryville City Schools release.
Hunt, 27, has also coached Maryville in basketball. He is a 2007 graduate of Maryville High School, where he played under Quarles. Hunt won state titles as a player in football and basketball.
“Derek is the best person, at this time, to carry this legacy program into the future,” said Maryville High School principal Greg Roach. “While he is young in years, his wealth of experience and demonstrated leadership abilities should offer us the greatest potential for a seamless transition.”
Hunt is a graduate of Maryville College, where he also played football.
Quarles compiled a 250-16 record, won 11 state championships and made 15 state championship appearances in 18 seasons at Maryville High School.
Quarles informed Maryville High School of his decision to take the Furman job on Dec. 20.
Updating the news on George Quarles, I'm told not only will he have essentially a co-offensive coordinator role but also be Asst Head Coach
