ALCOA, Tenn. — Alcoa star wide receiver Brandon Winton signed with the University of South Florida on Wednesday afternoon at Alcoa High School.
The early signing day for high school football players in Tennessee doesn't officially begin until Dec. 20, but the senior made his commitment to the Bulls clear.
Winton became the first 1,000-yard receiver for the Tornadoes since 2006 this season and helped the team capture a ninth-straight 3A state championship in his lone year with Alcoa. He spent his freshman and sophomore seasons with Webb before spending his junior year at IMG Academy in Florida.
USF head coach Alex Golesh was formerly the offensive coordinator at Tennessee, and Winton said that relationship went a long way in his commitment.
"[Golesh] first started recruiting me my sophomore year when he was at Tennessee," Winton said. "When he got to USF, it was a no-brainer. It felt like I was a piece missing already and the season didn't even start."
Winton will graduate from Alcoa early so he can be an early enrollee at USF in the spring.
