(WBIR-Knoxville) The Tennessee Volunteers lost a double overtime thriller to the Oklahoma Sooners in a checkered out Neyland Stadium Saturday night.
The Vols got on the board first with a field goal from Aaron Medley from 19 yards out early in the first quarter. Tennessee continued to dominate the quarter with help from a raucous crowd.
ESPN reported the Neyland Stadium sound level during the first quarter at 114 decibels on the sidelines. A jet engine is 140 decibels.
Late in the first quarter Tennessee put a touchdown on the board with a 9 yard pass from Josh Dobbs to Josh Malone.
Tennessee went up 10 to 0.
In the second quarter, the Vols punched it in again on a 4 yard run from Josh Dobbs to go up 17 to 0.
Just under five minutes to go in the first half, the Sooners finally put some points on the board with a 35 yard field goal.
Tennessee would go into halftime up 17 to 3.
In the third quarter, defenses prevailed and neither team put any points on the scoreboard.
With 8 minutes to go in the fourth, Oklahoma made it a game with a two yard pass from Baker Mayfield to Samaje Perine.
This cut the score to a 7 point lead for the Vols at 17 to 10.
With under a minute left in the 4th quarter, on third and goal Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield threw a 5 yard pass to the corner of the end zone to Sterling Shepard for a touchdown tying the game at 17 a piece.
This would send the game into overtime.
Tennessee started with the ball on offense and punched it into the end zone with an 8 yard touchdown from Jalen Hurd.
On the ensuing drive by Oklahoma, on fourth and goal from the 1 yard line Baker Mayfield punches it in for the score.
That knotted the game at 24 sending the game into a second overtime.
It just took Oklahoma just 3 plays to score.
Baker Mayfield with an 18 yard pass to Sterling Shepard giving the Sooners a 31 to 24 lead.
On the Tennessee drive to keep the game alive, Josh Dobbs threw an interception and the Sooners hold on for a 31 to 24 win.
