KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The University of Tennessee Office of Sustainability is ready to tackle waste this football season. The organization wants you to join them for their first "Zero Waste Game Day" on Aug. 31.

Through student engagement and collaborative programming, UTOS tackles issues related to waste diversion, resource conservation, food justice and more, according to the organization.

They said the university is aiming to divert 90% or more of game day waste from landfills by promoting recycling, composting and waste reduction.

"We need volunteers to help us reach our zero waste goal," UTOS said. "Whether you're passionate about sustainability or just want to make a difference, this is your chance to contribute."

Before the game, the first shift of volunteers will work in pairs to hand out recycling bags to fans in tailgate areas, pick up litter and collect the recycling bags from the tailgate areas. During the game, the second shift of volunteers will collect recyclables and litter around the outside of the stadium, gather bins to empty into the recycling truck and collect and wash recycling bins at the recycling warehouse.

The Vols will take on Chattanooga at Neyland Stadium at 12:45 p.m. If you would like to volunteer, you can sign up for a shift on GivePulse.
