ANAHEIM, Calif. — VFL and Farragut alum Ben Joyce continues to turn heads in the MLB. The Los Angeles Angels relief pitcher dialed up a 105.5 mph strikeout pitch on Tuesday night, which is the fastest strikeout pitch since the pitch-tracking era began in 2008.
Joyce's heater got Dodgers' shortstop Tommy Edman to swing and miss in the top of the ninth inning to preserve a 2-2 tie. The Angels ultimately fell to the Dodgers in extra innings, 6-2.
The 105.5 mph fastball is just slightly below the all-time MLB record, set by Aroldis Chapman in 2010 with a 105.8 mph pitch.
Joyce has made 31 appearances for the Angels this season and has recorded 33 strikeouts in 34.2 innings pitched. He also has a 2-0 record with a 2.08 ERA and four saves.
