Vol Navy sails into Nashville

Gail Barlar has wanted to be in the Vol Navy for 52 years.
The "Reelin' Away" is a part of the Vol Navy for the first time.

On board the "Reelin' Away", you'll find plenty of orange.  That's thanks to Gail Barlar.

"She's a true football-aholic," said Gail's husband Paul.  "She watches more games than I do."

The Barlars got up at 6 a.m. Wednesday and drove their boat from Gallatin Marina to Nashville.

"This has been Gail's dream supposedly since she was very young, so I was going to get this done," said Paul.

Gail went to her first Tennessee football game in 1963 at the age of 8 with her father.

"[I] looked down and saw all the boats down there and I wanted to be in the Vol Navy ever since that time," explained Gail.

In 2010, the Barlars got a boat and Gail thought her dream of being the Vol Navy would come true.

"One day, Gail asked me if we could go to a ball game in Knoxville in [the boat]," said Paul.  "Neither one of us knew how far it was, but I knew it was a long way.  I found out it was something like 850 miles. I didn't think we could make that trip."

But then the Vols announced they would open 2015 in Nashville.

"When they announced they were playing at Titans' stadium I felt like that was a trip that we could make," said Gail.  "45 miles as opposed to over 800 miles."

With Vol Navy flags flying, "Reelin' Away" docked in front of Nissan Stadium Wednesday afternoon, fulfilling a dream over five decades old.

"Its been at the top of my life list of things I've wanted to do. So for 52 years I've wanted to do this," said Gail. "It's great."
