KNOXVILLE, Tenn — Tennessee backup quarterback Nico Iamaleava scored his first NCAA touchdown on Saturday against UConn.
The Vols got him in the second half, up big on the Huskies. In the third quarter, he found tight end McCallan Castles for a 14-yard completion and the score. That made the score 56-3.
Iamaleava went 5 of 9 for 86 yards in that touchdown before head coach Josh Heupel subbed out Iamaleava for third-string quarterback Gaston Moore.
Iamaleava was one of the top prospects in the Class of 2023. He was a five-star quarterback coming out of high school and ranked as the No. 2 overall prospect in the country by 24/7 Sports.
Before this game, Iamaleava had only thrown five passes—all coming in the season opener against Virginia and against UTSA.
Vols Head Coach Josh Heupel has spoken positively of his backup quarterback's development throughout the season. He has said Iamaleava has been picking things up quickly and has developed well.
