KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — No. 4 Tennessee Men's Basketball has a chance to clinch its first outright championship since the 2007-2008 season, depending on the results of Wednesday's game against South Carolina.
The Vols hold the top spot in the conference with two games left, followed by South Carolina in second with a 12-4 record. No. 16 Alabama lost to Florida on Tuesday night, 103-84, so if Tennessee can close out against South Carolina on Wednesday night, they win the outright SEC title.
There are no tiebreakers when it comes to deciding the regular-season conference champion, so these are the scenarios left over after Tuesday's game between the Crimson Tide and the Gators.
Scenario 1: Tennessee wins, Alabama loses
This scenario is the best case for Tennessee because the Vols would clinch their first outright regular season crown since the 2007-2008 season. If Tennessee were to win, it would put the Vols two games ahead of the Crimson Tide, with just one game remaining for each team.
Scenario 2: Tennessee loses, Alabama loses
If Tennessee loses to South Carolina, the Gamecocks would jump Alabama in the standings and be even with Tennessee at 13-4 in the SEC. South Carolina and Tennessee would go into their respective final games of the season even atop the conference standings.
Tennessee will battle the Gamecocks on the road on Wednesday, March 6, at 7 p.m.
