OMAHA, Nebraska — Tennessee baseball advanced to the College World Series Finals on Charles Schwab Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The last time the Vols played in the series finals was in 1951 and it wasn't on the field they play on now. It was Rosenblatt Stadium - which is still standing right beside the zoo in Omaha.
That stadium was the host of the College World Series from 1950-2010.
While the original stadium no longer exists, parts of it remain in its original location. The sign that was above the scoreboard that reads "Rosenblatt" now sits above the mini stadium constructed as a memorial.
Seats lined around the mini stadium were salvaged from that stadium as well.
If you go to the parking lot, the zoo down the original first and third base line, you will find the foul poles from Rosenblatt Stadium still up as well. And if you go to the parking area for the Zoo, the foul poles are still down the first and third base line.
In the mini stadium built, people can play with toy bats and balls.
The 1951 Vols played with the real equipment in just the second year of the stadium hosting the College World Series.
UT lost their opening game of the CWS before rattling off four straight wins to make it to the final against Oklahomans. However, they lost 3-2 and finished as runner-up that season.
Tennessee finished with a 20-3 record and was 19-1 in SEC play that season. Sidney Hatfield who played for UT, won College World Series Most Outstanding Player.
Texas A&M, who UT will play for the national title this season, also happened to be in the College World Series that the Vols made the finals in back in 1051. However, the two teams never played in Omaha.
Tennessee and Texas A&M will play Game 1 of the College World Series Finals on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
