Alabama trounces Tennessee in Tuscaloosa

Tennessee shows some fight in the first half, but gets trounced in Tuscaloosa.

The 100th meeting between Tennessee and Alabama is one that Vol fans will want to forget.

Alabama dominated the Vols in a 45-7 win in Tuscaloosa, allowing only 108 yards, while gaining 605.

It took 12 quarters and some change, but Tennessee finally scored a touchdown, it just came from the defense. Daniel Bituli picked off Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and returned it for 97-yards.

That should tell you everything you need to know about this game.

Jalen Hurts was replaced early in the 3rd quarter after Alabama went up 28-0 on a touchdown pass to Irv Smith Jr.

And while that awful streak of quarters without a touchdown may have come to an end, the offense is still looking for its first score since the game against UMass on September 23.

There was a lot of fight from the Vols in the first half, especially on defense. Tennessee held Alabama on 3rd and goal on two separate occasions, but both times, Nick Saban elected to go for it on 4th down, converting on two Bo Scarbrough 1-yard goal line dives.

A couple of (literally only two) bright spots for the Vols:

- Jarrett Guarantano: The offense struggled, but the one thing you can't question is the toughness and poise of the redshirt freshman. Guarantano was hit, and hit often, but kept bouncing up. His development will be key for Tennessee's future this season and beyond.

- Rashaan Gaulden: The redshirt junior continues to separate himself as the best defender on Team 121. In the first half he made big hits, swarmed the ball even knocked down a few passes.

Tennessee (3-4, 0-4) will go on the road next Saturday to play the Kentucky Wildcats (5-2, 2-2) in Lexington.
