Winter storm to bring rain then more snow Friday into Saturday

Friday: A second and stronger system will develop and head our way Thursday night into Friday, with rain changing to snow expected as the system strengthens nearby. Snow could be heavy at times across northern areas Friday and will be mixed with sleet at times.

Rain will change to snow in the Central Valley by late afternoon/early evening with accumulating snows likely into Saturday morning. Highs Friday warm into the upper 30s to lower 40s, but will fall sharply by evening as transition to snow occurs. This is also when roads will start to deteriorate into the overnight hours.

Dozens of East Tennessee schools closed Friday

East Tennessee is finishing off the week with thousands of students once again at home.

The Knox County School System last week began using uniformed officers to spot check bus drivers.

Dozens of school systems canceled classes for Friday in anticipation of a large approaching system that features rain and snow.

Forecasters say we'll see rain much of the day before it begins turning to snow that's expected to accumulate in the northern parts of our region. Expected snowfall amounts range from several inches to perhaps 6 inches.

Body of missing West Tennessee boy found

The body of a 2-year-old West Tennessee boy missing a week was found Thursday, authorities announced Thursday afternoon at a press conference.

Noah Chamberlin's body was found in a clearing in the woods near his house in the Pinson, Tenn., area.

Searchers had expanded their acres-wide hunt for him when he was found.

Victims advocates respond to Ooltewah case

Hamilton County Superintendent Rick Smith asked school board members Thursday for an exit buyout, and the board accepted Smith's resignation.

Sources tell WRCB-TV that Smith could request a payment of $275,000 plus benefits that include sick day payments, resulting in a total package of around $350,000.

Smith has come under fire in recent weeks for his handling of the Dec. 22 Ooltewah High basketball rape/assault, which occurred in Gatlinburg.

KPD starts gang task force

The Knoxville Police Department has started a gang task force to address recent violence including the December killing of 15-year-old Zaevion Dobson.

The 30-member unit began Jan. 10.

On Wednesday WBIR will join WVLT, WATE and the Knoxville News Sentinel in covering a community forum on violence at Fulton High School.

400 pounds of East Tennessee beef recalled; Was sent to local restaurants

More than 400 pounds of beef that was sent to restaurants in the Knoxville area has been recalled.

Snapp's Ferry Packing Company, of Afton, Tenn., issued the recall on Wednesday after testing revealed the beef products may be contaminated with E. coli.

The Knox County Health Department said the beef was sold to Good Golly Tamale, the Oliver Royale and Savory and Sweet Truck.
