(WBIR - KNOXVILLE) Demolition is underway on Apartment Residence Hall on the University of Tennessee's campus.
The hall, often referred to simply as Andy Holt, has stood since 1969. The demolition is part of a project that replaces six high-rise facilities on campus with modern housing structures and a dining facility in a student focused, village-style community.
Frank Cuevas, executive director of university housing, said renovation would not solve the aging dorm's issues and would end up costing more than demolition and new construction. For example, improvements for heating, air-conditioning, and WiFi would have required lowering already low ceilings.
The estimated cost of the demolition work is $2 million. With all new buildings constructed to U.S. Green Building Council LEED standards using clean energy and maximizing efficiency, the University anticipates seeing significant savings over time.
The project is funded through housing and dining revenue. New courtyards, greenways, and outdoor amenities will be funded through the student beautification fee.
Presidential Court, also on Andy Holt Avenue, is expected to be the next residence hall to be demolished in the project.
