Original Story: Sullivan County emergency crews responded to two explosions at Holston Army Ammunition Plant in Kingsport Thursday, according to BAE Systems.
NBC affiliate WCYB in the Tri-Cities reports the first explosion happened around 8 a.m. and the second explosion happened just before noon.
BAE Systems spokesperson and Director of Public and Congressional Affairs Joint Munitions Command Justine Barati released the following statement after the second explosion:
"There was an explosion associated with the controlled burning of the building that caught fire this morning. There were no additional injuries. There is no danger to the community. We are allowing the building to burn to the ground. We'll have more information as it becomes available."
According to Barati, an alarm sounded near a building at the Holston Army Ammunition Plant indicating a fire around 8 a.m.
"The onsite safety, health, and environment teams immediately responded to the scene, and the building was secured. No workers were in the building at the time of the incident," Barati said. "Smoke was observed at the building and one worker in proximity to the building was transported to a local emergency room for observation."
The incident was controlled and, according to Barati, there was no danger of the fire spreading off the installation.
"As always, the health and safety of our employees and the communities where we live and work are always our top priority," she said.
BAE is in charge of the scene due to military regulations, according to a spokesperson from the Kingsport Fire Department.
News 5 has a crew on the scene and will provide more information as it becomes available.
