Harper Lee, the author of American classic "To Kill a Mockingbird" has died at the age of 89 in Monroeville, Alabama, her hometown.

MONROEVILLE, Ala. - Harper Lee, the author of American classic "To Kill a Mockingbird" has died at the age of 89 in Monroeville, Alabama, her hometown, NBC has confirmed.

The author won the Pulitzer Prize for her first novel in 1961, and it was the basis for an award-winning movie two years later.
"To Kill a Mockingbird" is largely regarded as a classic, hailed by many as on of the best works of fiction in American literary history.
Lee's sequel to "Mockingbird," "Go Set a Watchman" was released last summer.

Harper Lee was 89.
