TN Reconnect program offers second chance for adults

A new program is giving adults the opportunity to further their education for free.
Like Tennessee Promise, Tennessee Reconnect will cover student's cost of education.

The Tennessee Promise program made national headlines for offering two years of community college to high school seniors for free, but another Tennessee program offers a similar opportunity for adults who aren't fresh out of school.

Tennessee Reconnect is opening doors to those who want a second chance. College leaders and Governor Haslam hope it will help prepare students to fill new jobs opening up in the state.

Students must sign up for the grant, apply to attend a Tennessee College of Applied Technology campus, file FAFSA forms and enroll in a program.

Devante Hamilton tried going to college after graduating high school, now he's ready to give it another shot.

"I wasn't really serious about my education, I was more about having fun," Hamilton said. "I feel like I've got a second chance, and something I'm actually interested in."

He joined several others Saturday in signing up for Tennessee Reconnect.

"I never thought an opportunity like this would happen," said Hamilton. "I already have loans that I owe, but just to get in for free that gave me a little bit more motivation."

Hamilton is one of many excited for a second opportunity.

"I really got a lot of faith that this school will help you out and change your life."

Though the Tennessee Reconnect scholarship is new, the college has prepared students for new careers for a long time.

"There's so many opportunities out there for hands on mechanical stuff," said mechanical tool technology student Daniel Dossett. He will complete his training next April.

"I've just learned so much," said Dossett, "Coming in here I just didn't have any experience—they've taught me everything that I've need to know."

The college offers part-time courses and evening classes designed to offer flexibility to students who work and have families. Programs range from machine tool technology and welding to cosmetology and medical training.

Dossett hopes others will take advantage of the opportunity to pursue a new career.

Tennessee College of Applied Technology in Knoxville will be holding another open house April 6th. There, those interested can learn more about the programs offered, tour the campus, meet current students and faculty and apply for the school.

The open house will run from noon to 6 p.m. at their location 1100 Liberty Street.

The deadline to sign up for the Tennessee Reconnect grant is May 15.
