NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Two people were shot and five people are now in custody after a shooting near a residence hall on the Vanderbilt University campus Saturday afternoon, WSMV said.
Metropolitan Nashville Police Department told WBIR that one person had a "non-critical" wound to the arm and two suspects were in custody as of about 9 p.m. EDT.
Vanderbilt University later released a statement that two were wounded and five suspects were in custody.
"Police are investigating an altercation between external contractors conducting maintenance at an unoccupied Vanderbilt University residence hall,” the university said in a statement. “At this point, police are reporting shots fired by at least two individuals and five people are now in custody.”
The shooting occurred near Sutherland House, a dormitory at 1900 South Drive at around 4:30 p.m. EDT.
WSMV said Vanderbilt University Police issued a campus-wide alert that there had been a shooting. Police later sent an update that a suspect had been detained, but those in the area should avoid Sutherland House.
Vanderbilt police said there is no ongoing threat to the community, according to WSMV.
