'The pain is still very real' | The Covenant School releases statement one year after school shooting

On March 27, 2023, three children and three adults were killed by a school shooter at The Covenant School in Nashville.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Wednesday marked one year since six people, three 9-year-olds and three adults, were killed in a school shooting in Middle Tennessee.

The shooting happened around 10 a.m. CDT on March 27, 2023, at The Covenant School in the Green Hills neighborhood of Nashville.

The children who died were identified as Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs and William Kinney. The adult victims were identified as Cynthia Peak, 61, a substitute teacher, Katherine Koonce, 60, and Mike Hill, 61.

The shooter, Audrey Hale, was killed by two Metro Nashville Police Department officers.

Since the shooting, students at The Covenant School have been attending classes at a temporary location as the campus undergoes renovations. The plan is for students to return to the old school building sometime in the next few weeks.

The students will get the day off from classes on Wednesday and school leaders are holding a modified chapel service for families who wish to attend.

"One year ago, The Covenant School experienced one of the most tragic and heartbreaking events in our state's history," Gov.  Bill Lee said. "There are no words adequate enough to describe the immeasurable pain and sorrow of the families."

Immediately following the shooting, the legislature passed bills meant to improve school security. Lee also called a special session in August 2023 that focused on public safety.

The Covenant School published a statement on Facebook Wednesday saying that the "pain is still very real."
