Scientists and researchers announced one of the biggest discoveries in paleontology history.

The University of Witwatersrand, National Geographic Society, and the South African Research Foundation announced the discovery of a new species called Homo naledi.

This species is believed to be closely related to humans, and in the same grouping as Homo sapiens.

Fossils were discovered in a cave outside of Johannesburg, South Africa two years ago.

The species was discovered in a mountain known as the "Rising Star Cave," which is why the species has its name.

Crews removed more than fifteen hundred bones. Diagrams show a skeleton that looks similar to humans. Research points to this species walking on its hind legs.

This discovery is the

Two papers were published on this research project. A NOVA/National Geographic special called "Dawn of Humanity," premieres Sept. 16, 2015, at 9 p.m. ET on PBS.
