CALERA, Ala. — Is Alabama switching to the orange and white side? Let's just say, almost.
The city of Calera posted a photo online of its new water tower that's painted orange and white checkerboard and wanted to set the record straight.
"Yes, we know that bright, gaudy orange and white checkered pattern might scream 'Tennessee Volunteers’ end zone'— but rest assured, this is not some elaborate prank by city employees, and it hasn’t been 'vol-untarily' vandalized," the city said.
They said they received many calls and wanted to make sure that Bama knows the colors are mandated by the FAA.
According to the city, the water tower is close to the Shelby County Airport which means it has to display a checkerboard pattern to make it more visible to pilots and other aviators and to help avoid collision.
"Safety first, fashion second," the city said in a Facebook post. "So while it may look like we’re making a bold statement in orange, we’re just following the rules — no team loyalty implied!"
So they say.
