KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A young athlete is inspiring other students to win on and off the court.
Gunner Smith has always loved basketball but a few years ago, he took on a more difficult challenge.
Smith was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. The road to recovery has been tough.
He had to relearn to walk and hasn't been in school since August 2017.
But now, he's cancer-free.
He returned to Powell Elementary School and his first job is being a kid.
"I've worried about this for a couple days because they're about to see a grown man cry... my son and our family," said Brandon Smith, Gunner's dad.
Students and teachers surprised Gunner at school Wednesday morning.
