Results: Ten East Tennessee sheriff races on the ballot

On May 1, voters in ten East Tennessee counties will go to the polls to make their pick for their next sheriff. In some cases, only Republicans are on the ballot, so barring a successful write-in campaign, the primary winner will take the office.

Voters in several East Tennessee counties will select or narrow down their choices for a new sheriff in Tuesday's election.

MORE: ELECTION RESULTS

Knox County and Anderson County will have a new sheriff once this election cycle is finished.

In Knox County, Sheriff J.J. Jones is prevented from running again by term limits. Two Republicans were vying to replace Jones. Tom Spangler took a big lead when early voting results came in, leading Lee Tramel to concede that Spangler would be the next sheriff of Knox County. There are no Democrats in the race.

In Anderson County, current sheriff Paul White is not running for re-election. Russell Barker defeated Lewis Ridenour and Mark "Hollywood" Whaley for the Republican nomination. The primary winner in that race will face the lone Democrat in the race, Mark Lucas, in August.

Current sheriffs are running for re-election in eight counties:

Blount County Sheriff James Lee Berrong defeated fellow Republican candidate Patrick "Pat" England in the race. There are no Democrats running, so the winner of the primary will be sheriff.

In Loudon County, incumbent Tim W. Guider defeated two opponents in the Republican primary:

Robert "Scott" Newman and Marty Ward. There are no Democrats in the race.

Several familiar faces are running for sheriff in Monroe County. Current sheriff Tommy Jones II defeated Randy D. White in the Republican primary. White won the 2014 sheriff's race, but was removed from office after his qualifications were challenged. For the Democrats, former sheriff Bill Bivens defeated Patrick Upton. The winner of each primary will face off again in August.

Sheriff Esco R. Jarnagin in Hamblen County defeated challenger Ernest A. Burzell in the Republican primary. There are no Democrats running, so the winner Tuesday night will win the race.

In Cocke County, current sheriff Armando Fontes defeated Bryan Murr in a tight race for the Republican primary. There are no Democrats running.

In Jefferson County, challenger Jeff Coffey defeated incumbent sheriff G.W. "Bud" McCoig in the Republican primary. No Democrats are in the race.

Sevier County Sheriff Ronald L. "Hoss" Seals retains his job, defeating Republican challenger Tim S. Hurst. No Democrats are running.

In Grainger County, current sheriff James K. Harville easily defeated fellow Republican Frank Phillips in the primary. There are Democrats in the race.
