New Beacon Poll looks at obnoxious SEC fans, age limits for candidates, support for stadiums

This is the second Beacon Poll of the year. It seeks to learn Tennesseans' thoughts on politics and policies.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The SEC football team with the "most obnoxious" fans plays its games in Alabama.

At least, that's what poll results from the newest Beacon Poll show as released this week.

Among the 675 people surveyed across Tennessee in the Beacon Poll on the topic, 30 percent said the University of Alabama had the most annoying fans.

Big Orange fans probably shouldn't get too smug, however. University of Tennessee and University of Florida fans tied for second in the poll among 18 percent of those responding.

Trailing behind were Georgia fans at 6 percent and Ole Miss fans at 5 percent.

The fanbase question may be the most snarky and click-baity question in this quarter's poll released Thursday.

Much of the rest of the poll focuses on traditional political and policy questions in Tennessee, covering topics such as the 2024 Tennessee Senate and presidential races.

This Sunday's "Inside Tennessee" on WBIR focuses on the poll and talks with Beacon's Mark Cunningham. That airs 9:30 a.m.

The poll had a reported margin of error of plus or minus 2.79 percent.

2024 Tennessee Senate race

The poll also looked at next year's race for Senate in Tennessee. Republican Marsha Blackburn is the incumbent in a very red state.

So far at least two Democrats have said they're running -- state Rep. Gloria Johnson of Knoxville and Marquita Bradshaw, of Memphis. Bradshaw was the Democratic nominee in 2020 for the Senate seat won by Bill Hagerty.

According to the Beacon Poll, Blackburn leads Johnson 49 percent to 29 percent among 1,100 likely voters sampled. Thirty percent of those questioned said they were undecided.

Blackburn's lead over Bradshaw is smaller: 48 percent to 36 percent among 1,070 likely voters sampled. Twenty-five percent said they were undecided.

A question of age

Beacon also asked those sampled their thoughts about age and whether there should be a limit in key races.

Of 1,181 questioned, 80 percent said yes to the question of whether there should be an age limit in general for those elected to office. Twenty percent said no.

They also were asked if they'd support an age 75 limit for the position of president.

Results among the 941 likely voters showed 50 percent strongly supported it and 24 percent somewhat supported it. Seven percent had opposition in one form or another.

Public support for stadiums

Likely voters also were polled on their thoughts about public support for a stadium. The state has given about $13.5 million toward an estimated $114 million downtown Knoxville stadium, being financed through public bonds, and Chattanooga also is building a new stadium for its minor league baseball team.

According to Beacon, the 1,181 Tennesseans quizzed were split on whether tax dollars should be used to subsidize new stadiums. Among likely voters, 35 percent strongly supported or somewhat supported using public tax dollars to subsidize new stadiums.

Twenty-two percent strongly opposed the idea, and 22 percent said they were neutral.
