KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Republican nominee and former president Donald Trump is facing Vice President and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris to be the next president of the United States in the 2024 election.
Right after the polls closed in Tennessee at 8 p.m., the Associated Press called the state for Donald Trump.
About 77 million Americans voted early, but Harris and Trump pushed to turn out many millions more supporters on Tuesday. Trump's campaign careened through a felony trial and several reported assassination attempts, while Harris emerged as the Democratic candidate relatively late in the election cycle following President Joe Biden's decision to end his bid for re-election.
According to the Associated Press, Election Day went smoothly for most of the U.S. with isolated reports of hiccups and issues, including long election lines, technical troubles and ballot printing errors. In East Tennessee, election officials said the process went as expected. A short 15-minute pause in voting was reported at a Maryville polling place after a table collapsed and broke a controlling machine.
