2024 August Election: Close Tennessee House primary race ends with incumbent's defeat

During the state's primary elections, voters decide on who they want to see represent their party in the November general elections.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Voters are heading to the polls on Thursday to submit ballots for a long list of different races. Among them are the primary elections deciding who will represent their party during Tennessee's November general elections for state Senate and House seats.

Three major primary races caught the attention of voters in the Knoxville area ahead of the August election — one Democratic primary and two Republican primaries.

Democratic Rep. Sam McKenzie is kept his party's nomination against Dasha Lundy in state House District 15. The race between the two has seen involvement from the TEAM Kids PAC, which sent flyers on its own accord advocating for Lundy. McKenzie voted against the universal school voucher proposal during the last legislative session, while Lundy has not firmly signaled whether she approves of them.

Republican Senator Becky Duncan Massey kept her state Senate District 6 seat against challenger Monica Irvine. Massey has around $663,000 on hand to spend on her campaign, after spending around $91,000 so far. Meanwhile, Irvine has around $10,000 on hand and spent around $26,000 on her race.

Meanwhile, incumbent Republican Representative John Ragan lost against Richard Scarbrough for his party's nomination. He is not expected to keep his District 33 seat, which includes Anderson County. Scarbrough, a former Clinton police chief, received thousands of dollars in donations from the TEAM Kids PAC.
