KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Super Tuesday started on March 5, when people packed voting booths across the country to decide on who they wanted to see as the President of the U.S. Alongside the presidential primary elections, people in East Tennessee also went to vote in their local elections.
Voters in East Tennessee mostly decided on who they want to represent their party in the upcoming general election. In most East Tennessee areas, county general elections are set for Aug. 1.
In Knox County, several commission seats were up for grabs. The Knox County Election Commission said 26,885 early voting and absentee ballots were cast ahead of Election Day. Most were for the Republican Party Primary Election, at 21,440 ballots.
Knox County also had a unique Super Tuesday race for the District 8 seat on its Board of Education. The winner of that election, Travis Wright, took the seat immediately because the man who previously had it, Mike McMillan, died at 74 years old.
Wright will likely start his term on Thursday, at the Knox County Schools' regular meeting.
Phil Ballard also only led by 12 votes after all precincts reported in on the Assessor of Property race.
Charles Fraizer also only led by five votes in Knox County Commission's District 1 seat.
In Blount County, 6,753 early voting and absentee ballots were cast. It has around 95,000 registered voters, and around 88% of all ballots were cast for the Republican party's election.
In Anderson County, there were 4,132 ballots cast during the early voting period. Around 84% of them were for the Republican party's election and most of the local races on the ballot are uncontested. However, four people are running in the race for Anderson County's 7th District Chancellor.
Claiborne County also has a referendum on the ballot, and voters will need to decide whether to implement an additional $72 wheel tax on top of the existing fees. If it passes, drivers will need to pay a total of around $150 in fees to register a car.
