KNOXVILLE, Tenn. —
Background
Republican incumbent Elaine Davis is running against Democratic challenger Bryan Goldberg to represent District 18 in the Tennessee House of Representatives.
Residents of the very oddly constructed House District 18, mostly in West Knox County, have seen a spirited race between Davis and Goldberg. Davis first won the seat two years ago.
State Republican leadership made a point this summer of gathering to support Davis at a kick-off campaign event.
Goldberg filed a lawsuit against Davis and Republican leadership during the race, saying they were making false statements about him and his wife. The lawsuit focused on a website and flyers that claimed the Goldbergs failed to pay their property taxes. Goldberg said he was a victim of theft when some of his mail was stolen, and a check for the taxes was modified and cashed by the thief.
He said he later paid the property taxes and the alleged thief was arrested in Indiana. Davis said she was not involved with nor aware of the website.
Davis won the District 18 seat around two years ago when she beat Democratic candidate Gregory Kaplan 54% to 46%.
