Even though the election is more than two years away, a Knox County commissioner made it official on Wednesday-- he's running for mayor.
Bob Thomas announced his run for the county's top office at a luncheon at Powell Auction.
Thomas was elected to the Knox County Commission District 10 At-Large Seat in 2014. The Knoxville-native has had a long career in media, hosting radio shows and writing for television shows. You can read his full bio here.
He is married to his wife Kim, and they have three children and five grandchildren.
Thomas says his experience *outside of Knox County politics" uniquely qualifies him for the job.
He outlined what his priorities would be for the county if he's elected-- low taxes, new businesses, and keeping our neighborhoods safe.
"People in Knox County are very happy. We've just got to make sure we keep our taxes low, I've heard rumors of people willing to raise taxes. We've got to keep our neighborhoods safe, businesses coming to town. I'd like to see more tax money getting to our classrooms so our kids and grandkids can get a good education in Knox County," said Thomas.
Last month, Thomas named a political treasurer to his campaign, which allows him to raise and spend money for his bid.
Knox County mayor Tim Burchett is currently serving his second, and final, term as Knox County Mayor.
The Republican primary is set for May 2018.
