Police: Pigeon Forge officers shoot, kill knife-wielding man

The man was shot and killed Monday morning.

Pigeon Forge police shot and killed a man Monday morning after he brandished a knife as they tried to take him into custody, according to the department.

The TBI is now investigating the department's use of deadly force.

The man was identified as Samuel Charles Talbott, 42.

"When Talbott was confronted he produced a knife and grabbed another individual who was inside the residence," a release from the TBI states. "Talbott refused to comply with numerous verbal commands to drop the weapon. The situation escalated and resulted in one of the officers firing at least one shot, striking Talbott."

According to the TBI, the shooting happened in the 2800 block of Suncrest Drive. The TBI stepped into the investigation, which is not unusual, at the request of Sevier County District Attorney General Jimmy Dunn.

The incident happened about 10:30 a.m. Monday, according to the Pigeon Forge Police Department.

Police were "attempting to serve an outstanding warrant" when the man pulled out the knife, a Pigeon Forge release states.

"Our officers tried to defuse the situation but the suspect ignored repeated commands," the release states.

Talbott was dead at the scene.
