Service & Sacrifice: 2023 Year in Review

Our profiles included the newest recipient of the Medal of Honor and a combat veteran working to make sure military veterans and families receive benefits.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — In 2023, we celebrated year 15 of reporting our regular series about the lives and life challenges of East Tennessee Veterans.

“Just happen to be at the right place at the right time,” said Larry Taylor, who is a native of East Tennessee and America’s newest national hero after receiving the Medal of Honor from President Biden during a formal ceremony in the fall.

The award comes almost 55 years after Captain Taylor demonstrated extraordinary courage and ingenuity saving the lives of four fellow soldiers from a battlefield in Vietnam.

The story of Larry Taylor represents the stories of millions of Americans who have volunteered for the military and signed a pledge to sacrifice their lives in service to this country. Often their sacrifices go unrecognized.

It is the goal of our series to highlight those stories and offer a glimpse of what military veterans faced during their time in uniform and after their service.

In this link, you can find our full series for 2023 and the 14 years prior in this link via the WBIR-TV YouTube page.
