San Diego police officials said Friday that a suspect was in custody in connection with a shooting at a routine police stop late Thursday that left one officer dead and one wounded.

In a post on Twitter, Police Chief Shirley Zimmerman said she had gone to the hospital and that the injured officer was out of surgery. "He is expected to survive!" she wrote.

Zimmerman told reporters that police were looking for a second suspect in the incident in a southeast San Diego neighborhood. Police warned residents to remain in their homes as authorities are still conducting an active search.

Zimmerman did not indicate what triggered the shooting or whether it was thought to be an ambush.

Police departments nationwide have remained on high alert following the killing of five police officers in Dallas and three in Baton Rouge, La., earlier this month.
