American Honda's sales rose 14% in April as the automaker's lineup displayed resiliency despite consumers' rush out of the small cars Honda is known for.

Car sales rose 14%, and sales of crossovers, sport-utility vehicles and pickup trucks rose 15%.

Overall, Edmunds.com had projected sales growth of 12% for Honda, while Kelley Blue Book had projected sales growth of 9%.

Honda managed the sales increases despite a 7.5% decline in incentive spending per vehicle to $1,631, according to TrueCar.

The namesake Honda brand recorded sales growth of 15%, while the Acura luxury brand was up 9%.

"The strong cadence of new Honda cars and light trucks coming to market is clearly resonating with customers," said Jeff Conrad, senior vice president and general manager of the Honda division, in a statement.
