It was a special weekend for an annual Marine Mud Run that has been honoring Lt. Alexander "Sandy" Bonnyman for years.

The three mile course took the medal of honor winner's name since its start.

His grandson, Clay Bonnyman Evans, says participating in this event gives folks a tiny glimpse into military training.

"Its suppose to simulate in a very small way what marines go through. I know it doesn't come close but its a fun test and I like to get dirty."

Organizers typically clean Bonnyman's gravestone on the day of the run.

They say this year is special because the plot had only been a memorial until now. Since his remains have been sent home, it can finally become a burial.
