Man dead, woman injured in Cookeville church shooting

Police believe the male subject is responsible for the shooting. They say his death appears to be a suicide.
Cookeville, TN

COOKEVILLE, TN (WSMV) A man was killed and a woman was injured in a shooting at a Cookeville church Sunday morning.

Just after 9 a.m., Putnam County officials received reports of an active shooter at Double Springs Community Church on Double Springs Road in Cookeville.

When the Putnam County Sheriff's Department SWAT Team responded, they found a woman with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. They also found a male subject, dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. SWAT also found a second woman, who was uninjured.

The three people were found in the basement of the church.

Putnam County Sheriff David Andrews says they believe the male subject is responsible for the shooting. He has been identified as Tommy Meadows. The women have been identified as his wife, Wanda Meadows, and her sister, Etta Medley.

Sheriff Andrews says it appears Meadows shot his sister-in-law before shooting himself. They believe he committed suicide but are investigating the shooting as a homicide until they can determine his wounds were self-inflicted.

Medley was taken to Cookeville Regional Hospital. Her current condition is unknown.

Wanda Meadows was not injured.

Double Springs Community Church's Sunday School services were scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Worship was scheduled to follow at 11 a.m.

It is unclear how Meadows, his wife and Medley are affiliated with the church, if at all.

Police are not releasing further details at this time.
