KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Lisa New, Zoo Knoxville President and CEO, has been elected to serve on the National Board of Directors for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

As an AZA board member, New is one of 13 representatives from 233 accredited zoos and aquariums across the U.S.

Members are responsible for implementing a strategic plan that encompasses leadership in animal welfare, conservation of endangered species and a sustainable financial model for the organization.

This is the first time Zoo Knoxville has had representation on the national board. In addition to her board responsibilities, she also sits on the AZA PR Committee, Animal Welfare Committee and Wildlife Conservation Committee.

New’s career began as a zookeeper at Zoo Knoxville in 1990, and in May 2013, she was chosen by the zoo’s board of directors as President and CEO.

Under her leadership, the zoo has launched a new brand, broken attendance records for four consecutive years and enhanced guest experience.

Most recently, the zoo invested $14 million to build Boyd Family Asian Trek, a world-class breeding facility and habitat for endangered Malayan tigers and white-handed gibbons.

New’s appointment to the AZA’s Board of Directors is recognition of her vision and accomplishments that have raised the profile of Zoo Knoxville nationally.

“Lisa is an insightful and innovative leader with a contagious passion for wildlife and wild places. Her experience at Zoo Knoxville and dedication to serving the AZA community makes her well-suited for this important position,” said Dan Ashe, President and CEO of AZA. “I welcome Lisa to the AZA Board of Directors, and look forward to working with and learning from her as we continue to advance the zoo and aquarium profession.”

Zoos and aquariums accredited by the AZA are the models of 21st century zoological facilities: purposeful and mission-driven animal advocates and conservation organizations.

Accreditation by the AZA is the standard of excellence for zoos and aquariums. Accredited zoos and aquariums in the U.S. are working together and alongside their partners to help save animals from extinction.
