1,500 youth advocates gather in Knoxville for Children's Defense Fund's 'Ella Baker Child Policy Training Institute'

The event held a community teach-in as well as a march to promote reading.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Thousands of youth advocates were in Knoxville on Saturday for the Children's Defense Fund's "Ella Baker Child Policy Training Institute."

The event was held at the Knoxville Convention Center on Henley Street. It featured a community teach-in and a march to promote reading.

"The week-long conference helps train hundreds of college-aged young people how to teach CDF Freedom Schools curriculum at CDF Freedom Schools program sites across America," a media release said.

The training event prepared attendees to participate in 2024's National Day of Social Action on July 17.

"On that day, CDF Freedom Schools scholars across the country will organize activities in their communities that encourage young people to read and embrace culturally relevant literature," the release said.
