You're not imagining it—there is less Christmas music on the radio

Instead of playing Christmas music around the clock, stations like B97.5 started to slowly introduce the holiday mix right after Thanksgiving.

When you get in the car and turn on the radio, you may hear "Jingle Bells" or "Deck the Halls" every once in a while, but the Christmas music isn't playing on repeat like you might expect.

Radio stations in Knoxville like B97.5 are trying something new this season. Instead of Christmas music all the time, they're playing a select few songs, and they're being strategic about when they'll start playing more.

"People obviously say that they love Christmas music. Who is going to say that they don't like Christmas music?" said Shane Cox, the Branding Manager at B97.5.

Cox said people want to control what Christmas music they listen to, how much and when.

"We found that people want all Christmas, all the time on their own terms - it's not really all the time," Cox said.

Instead of playing Christmas music around the clock, the station started to slowly introduce the holiday mix right after Thanksgiving.

"This year, we decided to feature the best of the best to start the holiday season off and as we get further into this holiday Christmas window you're going to hear more and more Christmas music as we actually get closer," he said.

Right now, each hour, they're playing about 25 percent Christmas music and 75 percent top hits and pop favorites.

"We are giving you today's hits and all your Christmas favorites. It's the best of both worlds this year," Cox said.

The top three songs in the Christmas music genre are "Jingle Bell Rock," "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" and "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year."

For those who say the "more the merrier" when it comes to Christmas music, don't worry, it's coming.

"As we get into the weekend of Christmas it will be all Christmas, all the time on B97.5," Cox said.
