Woman charged with vehicular homicide, DUI following wrong-way, fatal crash in Knoxville

34-year-old Ellen Rideout has been booked at the Roger D. Wilson Detention Facility.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Update (12/14): 

The Knoxville Police Department has identified the adult woman killed in a wrong-way crash on I-40 East.

84-year-old Jennifer Spargimino died after Ellen Rideout, who was traveling west in the eastbound lanes of I-40, hit the car she was in, according to KPD. 

Rideout was charged with vehicular homicide and DUI.

A 34-year-old woman has been charged with vehicular homicide and DUI following a wrong-way, fatal crash that happened early Sunday morning on 1-40 East in Knoxville.

According to the Knoxville Police Department (KPD), officers responded to a crash with injury on 1-40 East near I-640 in West Knoxville at around 1:20 Sunday morning. 

Based on an investigation at the scene, police say a Subaru Sedan driven by 34-year-old Ellen Rideout was traveling west in the eastbound lanes of I-40 when it struck an eastbound Toyota Prius. The passenger of the Prius, an adult woman, was transported to the UT Medical Center where she was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival. The Prius driver was not injured. 

Rideout has been booked at the Roger D. Wilson Detention Facility. 

The crash remains under investigation by KPD crash reconstruction investigators. Authorities have not revealed the identity of the woman who died as a consequence of the crash.
