(WBIR) The Naval Academy has released a statement saying that Will McKamey, 19, of Knoxville passed away Tuesday while in a coma at the Baltimore Shock Trauma Center.
McKamey's death comes three days after he collapsed during a spring football practice for Navy. Doctors performed emergency brain surgery to relieve pressure on a blood clot on McKamey's brain.
McKamey suffered a similar injury during his senior football season at Grace Christian Academy in November 2012, but that injury did not require surgery.
The Naval Academy said that his teammates, classmates and the Navy football staff have been overwhelmed by the news.
Funeral arrangements are still being worked out at this time.
