'He thought he was dying' | Wife of guard assaulted at Dandridge juvenile detention facility speaks

The Chief of Police in Dandridge is asking the juveniles charged with the assault to be prosecuted as adults.

DANDRIDGE, Tenn. — The Dandridge Police Department said it is investigating an assault that happened over the weekend at the Mountain View Youth Development facility.

It is a juvenile detention facility, and the chief of police said Jason Zaske was sent to the hospital after the assault. He had worked for the facility for around three years, and the chief asked the District Attorney to prosecute the juveniles involved as adults.

After the assault, Jason's wife, Julie Zaske said she went to the hospital to see him.

"That was the most difficult thing I've ever had to see in my entire life," she said. "He told me that there was a moment that he thought he was dying when that was happening to him. And, you know, this is it. And he said he made his peace with God at that moment. And, I'm very glad he did that. But, I'm also very glad that he did not have to meet his maker."

Jason is a father to three girls, and he had critical injuries after the assault. He has since been released and is recovering at home with his family.

"It could be anywhere from three to nine months before he can be back to things like dirt biking, and, you know, hiking and the things that he does for fun," said Julie.

She said her biggest challenge going forward will be keeping Jason in bed to rest.

"Hopefully, I can get him to do his best at holding still, so he doesn't reinjure himself. For the next six weeks, that's probably going to be the hardest," she said.

She also said she wanted to thank everybody who showed support for her family. Jason also released a statement after the attack. It is below.

"Thank you all who have been supportive to me, my recovery and my family," he said. "Every prayer is received and appreciated, and every dollar is received with appreciation and will not be wasted."

Anyone who wants to donate to the family can do so online.
